My Story

“A woman’s place is in the kitchen and by her husband’s feet.” This was a common sentiment in Kenya, when I was growing up. Girls and women were often discouraged from pursuing their dreams. My parents raised me differently and infused a sense of confidence in me. I was a persistent, hardworking, straight-A student who believed that my life had limitless possibilities. In high school, I read the book “Think Big,” and prayed that I would end up at Yale University and become an amazing physician.

With a lot of faith, effort, and determination, my dreams actually came true! I enrolled at Yale College in the summer of 2001, joined the medical school four years later, and eventually became a board-certified dermatologist after completing residency at UCSF. I felt very honored because Dermatology is one of the most competitive and highly desired medical specialties. It is not a well-represented field, and just 3% of dermatologists are African-American.
I moved to East Tennessee to join my husband after residency, and started the Dermatology department at a busy multi-specialty group. I felt like I was living the dream life: I had a great job, a dedicated husband, beautiful children, and a lovely home. In 2019, my family had a near-death experience when an aircraft we were flying had an engine failure. That shocking experience caused me to re-evaluate my life and realize that although I was happy and comfortable, I was not living up to my full potential and fulfilling my life’s purpose.

Therefore, I moved out of my comfort zone. I enrolled in leadership programs, read books, listened to podcasts, and hired a coach. The result? This new version of me that’s embracing new opportunities and touching more lives. I am now a mindset coach, speaker, best-selling author, and podcaster. I am trying to live the best version of my life, and would love to enhance your life as well!
